Horray!

The boys returned to school this morning and I admit to doing a little happy dance.

Tomorrow I leave for Colorado Springs. I'm going to keep Mom company over the long weekend while Daddy is at Aunt Ann and Uncle Tony's 50th Anniversary party. Mom's not up to the trip and I didn't want Daddy to miss the occassion. All 11 of the brothers and sisters will be there from both Europe and the US.

I'll be back Monday and Sam and the boys will survive, I've left them plenty of food and clean clothes.

Back to School

Stephanie returned to Occidental yesterday. We loaded up her car and mine and then we caravaned over to Oxy and got her moved in. This year she and Talia are in Stewart Hall, aka Stewie. Their dorm room is definately bigger this year and they've got both a nice big closet and some storage cupboards.

After we got Steph mostly settled we hit a little local restaurant that she enjoys for a quick bite to eat and then we dropped Stephanie back off in front of her dorm. She called this morning to say hi when she came in from buying her books for the upcoming semester.

The boys and I did a Staples run so they are all set for school starting themselves. Can't wait for Wednesday to get here, I'm tired of listening to them moan about going back!

It's that Time Again

Yesterday Andrew had school registration and today Adam had his. Both boys now have their schedules in hand which means there was lots of contacting of friends to see if they had any classes together. This afternoon Adam has an appointment to get his eyes checked and tomorrow both boys go for their physicals. Then all we've got to do is go buy the school supplies and they are set. Classes start Wednesday, August 30th.

This is Stephanie's final week at work, Friday is her last day and Sunday she's got to head back to college. Yesterday I went and picked up the last few items she needed and Saturday will be devoted to getting her packed up. Her roomate Talia left some stuff stored here at our house so we'll take that over on Sunday for her as well.

Steph is moving into the dorm a few days early because she has to start her on-campus job Monday. She's got a ten hour a week internship in the admissions office. I'm curious to see the girls new dorm room, I didn't get to see it last spring but I understand it's quite a bit bigger and they've got a full sized closet this time around.

At least now I'm used to Steph being gone so it won't be as much of a wrench when she leaves but I'll still miss her terribly.

The Grand Canyon

The views from the north rim are spectacular!

Mesa Verde National Park

You hike down to the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde and then it's a long way back up but Ann and Shawn made it.

This is Cliff Palace.

And this is Long House. We explored four cliff dwellings that day.

More Bryce Canyon

As the light changed throughout the day the colors of the rock formations just kept changing and becoming more and more dramatic.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Pondering the incredible landscapes and colors of Bryce Canyon.

We're Home

The boys and I made it home safely a little bit ago after a nine hour drive from the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We made a few stops on the way, twice for food and gas and a few times my legs started to cramp so we'd stop and stretch a bit. We clocked about 2500 miles all told in just under two weeks.

The car is unloaded, some things put away and the rest can wait for tomorrow. We've ordered in dinner and after this I intend to just vegitate because I'm pooped.

On Thursday morning we left Cortez, Colorado and headed for the Four Corners. We spent two days at the Comfort Inn in Cortez, a small town in southwestern Colorado that sits on the edge of two Indian Reservations and within a short drive in any direction there are several national parks and monuments.

That was the second Comfort Inn we stayed at on this trip and if you're traveling on a budget I highly recommend the chain after our exprience. They offer a fantastic free breakfast and have high speed computers available for guests to use which is how I was able to post along the way.

Ann and Shawn had to be back at work on Friday and it was a 7 to 8 hour drive back to Colorado Springs for them and the boys and I had about 5 hours of driving ahead of us so we left early. Our goal was to say good-bye and each head out from Four Corners by noon and it was a little less than an hours drive from Cortez.

There's not much at the Four Corners except the large monument that marks where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona meet. I haven't been there since I was a kid, about 40 years ago now and then it was just a little plaque in the ground out in the middle of nowhere. Now it's a big plaque out in the middle of nowhere. Of course we all had to stand in 'four places at once' and document it with a photo. (We took over 200 pictures on this trip)

They have also opened a small museum dedicated to Indian tribes whose reservations encompase those four states for miles around. And they've also started a small outdoor market where the artisans from the area gather to display and sell their wares. It was fascinating watching a Navaho gentleman carve a beautful hummingbird on a freshly shaped clay pot. The detail was exquisite. I ended up buying one of his pots and it was tough to choose because they were so beautiful.

After making sandwiches it was sadly time to say our good-byes. My sister and her husband are the best, and we all had such a fantastic time together. As we exited, Ann and Shawn went left and we turned right, heading across the Navaho reservation in Northern Arizona. The first forty minutes or so of the drive it was pretty flat and barren but then we hit a long stretch of startling rock formations and the scene just kept getting more and more incredible. We settled in for the evening at Jacob Lake, a little hamlet in the Kanab National Forest 45 minutes outside the entrance to the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Friday we spent the day saying WOW!! a lot. I've never been to the north rim before and I really appreciated that it wasn't as crowded and touristy as the south rim. The north rim is also 2000 feet higher than the south so you can see even further when it's clear and we had a glorious sunny morning before the clouds came in the afternoon.

We did three short hikes and the boys enjoyed climbing around a bit. To say the views of the canyon were spectacular would be an understatement. After a nice meal at the lodge we were all more than satisfied that our visit had been everything we hoped.

And now we're back. I'll post some photos over the next few days.

Trip Update

We had a wonderful visit with my parents. Dad took the boys to the Broncos training camp and then another day they went rafting down the Arkansas river.

Yesterday my sister Ann and her husband Shaun joined us and we loaded up and drove across Colorado down to Mesa Verde National Park. I haven't been here since I was a kid.

We spent today exploring the cliff dwellings and tomorrow we're heading down to the four corners and then it's on to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It's been a lovely trip and I hate to see it end but from the Grand Canyon we've got to head home.

On the Road

We are currently at a Comfort Inn just outside Montrose, Colorado.

Yesterday the boys and I left Tina's house in Las Vegas and headed for Zion National Park. It was about a 2 hour drive so it wasn't even noon yet and we spent the afternoon enjoying the breathtaking views in the park.

From Zion we drove an incredible scenic route through lushy valleys and red rock canyons to the Ruby Inn just outside the entrance to Bryce Canyon. We had a great dinner, then Andrew went swimming while Adam and I took a walk and watched the sunset. After some homemade ice cream we called it a day--and it was a pretty fantastic day.

This morning we were up early and after a big breakfast we headed into Bryce Canyon. First we drove up to the top most point at 9316 ft so we could see the whole Canyon before us.

Despite the overcast wheather words can't describe how incredibly beautiful it is. Then we drove slowly back down stopping at each viewpoint to see even more incredible wonders. We didn't have enough time to do more than a short hike but we choose a path off Bryce Point which was magnificent.

The boys wanted to horseback ride along the Canyon Rim so we had arranged to do that in the early afternoon so after we grabbed a very rushed lunch we saddled up and followed the guide about four miles to the rim. Needless to say the breathtaking wonders we saw today are something none of us we forget very soon.

We headed out about three and drove across Utah to Green River where we stopped for some dinner, gas and a good stretch. Then we drove straight through to Montrose. Tomorrow morning we'll head for Colorado Springs via Gunnison and cross the continetial divide at Monarch Pass. We should be at Mom and Dads by early evening.

Whew!

Just a quick post before I call it a day, my brain is starting to shut down.

Since Tina and family left I've been franticly trying to get done any work that is due in the two week period the boys and will be gone so I've been reading, writing and researching like a crazy woman the past couple of days but I'm almost done.

In the past two days I've read Boarding the Enterprise, written up and submitted the review of Burning Dreams, put the finishing touches on a recent interview that's due next week and sent that off and written up my SciFi Pulse book preview column which I'll send in tomorrow after I proof read it. Now all that is left is to write up the review of Boarding the Enterprise sometime over the next two days.

I've got two other books to write reviews of when I get back and I was hoping to have them in hand before I leave so I can start reading them but that's not looking like its going to happen so they'll have to wait until I return.

Then there's two articles and another column due by September 1st but I'm not going to think about that now. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it--Bring on the vacation!

Family Fun

Tina (Sam's sister) and family decided to extend their visit by an extra day. We really enjoyed having them and I know they really enjoyed themselves.

In addition to taking in a Dodger game they wanted to visit Hollywood so Saturday Adam and I played tour guide and we headed down to show them the sites. Sunday was Nicole's 14th birthday and she wanted to go to the beach so we packed up and headed to Zuma beach in Malibu to spend the day followed by a wonderful dinner at a local Sushi place.

Andrew missed most of their visit as he had been invited by his friend Daniel's family some time ago to go with them on a weekend trip to the Grand Canyon. They got back Sunday night and a good time was had by all.
