Wonderful Memories
Andrew and I had a wonderful time at the convention in Sacramento this past weekend.
We arrived without incident on Friday afternoon and after checking in we meet up with a good friend Boyd Harmon. Boyd lived in Sacramento for a few years so he knew quite a few people attending and he kindly gave us a quick tour of the immediate area pointing out the best places to eat.
Andrew has been to several conventions with me in the past but hadn't seen some of the guests that were attending this convention, specificly Marc Alaimo, John DeLancie and Armin Shimerman. Of course the big event of the weekend was Sunday when the guests were Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner. The convention was sold out and Sunday they had to turn a lot of folks away.
They spent two hours onstage, individually and together and it was almost like watching an old episode of Burns and Allen with Nimoy as the straight guy. Mr. Nimoy is starting to look a bit frail but Shatner is as energetic as ever.
All three kids have been attending conventions with me since they were small and as we flew home last night I couldn't help but reflect on all the wonderful memories we have from various conventions we've attended throughout the years and the great people we have meet along the way.

Hi, Jackie! Your comment that "Mr. Nimoy is starting to look a bit frail" made me wince. It's like noticing that my mother is not the bundle of energy she used to be. I think one reason so many people object to recasting the Kirk and Spock roles is that many Trek fans are aging, but don't want to face it. Until they do, they won't be able to "pass on the torch". I want to see that torch passed, which is why I enjoy seeing kids (like yours)becoming fans.

I know I'm an old fart but I can't stand the idea of
someone else playing those roles but I understand the
point you make and I think you've probably got
something there.
I thought Mr. Nimoy made a very good point when
someone asked him if he had a problem with the idea of
someone else playing Spock and he said no he didn't
but that he didn't believe it would be a good idea for
a well established actor to play the part.
As he put it people would look at someone like Ben
Afflick (old rumor) who is well known played such a
beloved character that people would look at the screen
and think "Oh it's Ben Afflick trying to be Spock".
In his opinion if the part is recast it should be an
unknown who won't bring that type of baggage.
